Little Baraka survived a poacher’s snare around her head, only to fall victim to the 2022 drought. Her name means ‘blessing’ in Swahili — a fitting tribute to how fortunate she was to escape two life-threatening hurdles.

Baraka’s story with us began at the height of the 2022 drought, which had a devastating effect on Tsavo’s elephant population. On 11th October 2022, Mwatate Sisal Estate reported an orphaned elephant calf on their land. She was young — about 18 months old — and desperately weak. There was no trace of her family or any other wild elephants in the area. The calf had clearly been alone and without food for some time: she was emaciated, dehydrated, and looked resigned to her fate.

The cheetah is the world’s fastest land animal. Nature's equivalent of a Formula 1 race car, they can reach speeds of 120 kph!

But one thing they can’t outrun is the human threat. Once widespread throughout Africa and Asia, cheetahs now occupy just 10 percent of their historic range. Over the past century, their population has plummeted by 90 percent, leaving less than 10,000 individuals today.

With so few remaining, every individual is extra precious and this cat was reported to us by Big Life Rangers, after they sighted him limping.

Our pilot discovered this bull among a group of six elephants. He had been struck by an arrow, and the heavy suppuration around the wound suggested poison was at work — a clear sign that he had been targeted by poachers.

The SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit rushed to the scene while our pilot kept eyes on the patient.

Losoito's story with us began on 16th April 2023. During a fixed-wing patrol, SWT pilot Roan Carr-Hartley spotted an unlikely duo traversing the Losoito area of Tsavo West National Park: a young calf protected by a very large bull.

Tsavo was in the grips of a long, severe drought at the time, which led to an increase in orphans who lost their mothers or could no longer keep up with their herd. We suspect that's what happened in this case and the calf had found refuge with the bull, but at about two years old, she was too young to survive without milk. Worryingly, she also had an extremely bloated stomach, which hinted at a parasite load. After comprehensive patrols confirmed that she was an orphan, KWS called for a rescue.

Here in Tsavo, lifesaving treatments unfold on the ground — but they often begin in the air. This one started with a routine fixed-wing patrol over Kamboyo. During the dry season, bulls congregate around reliable watering points, which makes these areas vulnerable to poaching. On 21st October 2022, rangers on Mwatate Sisal Estate reported a young orphaned elephant. She was very weak and emaciated. In the drought, only the fittest prevail, and elephants must make heartbreaking decisions for the survival of the herd. When an elephant lacks the strength to keep up with the herd in search of food or water, they can be left behind. This was likely Busara’s fate.
